OUR HISTORY

How Did We Get Here?
In 2007, and again in 2017, the Marin County Civil Grand Jury found Marin County to be the fastest aging county in the state.

By 2030, one out of three Marin residents will be 65 or older.

Currently, almost 20% of the county's population is 65 or older.

BACKGROUND
After working on the 2007 Civil Grand Jury report entitled “Aging in Marin: An Essay in Uneasiness”, Loulie Sutro, pictured above, read an article in the Wall Street Journal about an organization for seniors in Boston called Beacon Hill Village.

Learning more about their efforts to take charge of their independence by creating an organization to bring needed services to seniors at home, she formed a task force to discuss the problems of aging in Marin County.

Meanwhile, the County of Marin issued a "Strategic Plan for Aging Services in Marin" laying out a road map for "creating healthy aging communities." Additionally, the Marin Community Foundation published its report on "Services for Older Adults in Marin."

These studies reported that seniors living in their own homes need services like housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, errands, personal care, medication management and social engagement.

In response to these findings, Marin Villages was incorporated in May of 2009, electing Loulie Sutro as its first President of the Board of Directors.

The goal of Marin Villages is to provide the leadership and guidance in developing and growing local villages, to partner with other organizations throughout Marin County, and to help our older population remain, at home, in the community.

Our Local Villages offer members services that enhance opportunities for social interactions, provide a network of volunteers for transportation, errands and other key services, and develop referrals to trusted, vetted 'for pay' service providers.

Marin Villages has grown to a community of over 700 members and volunteers from communities where local villages have formed.  We have Local Villages in, Mill Valley, Ross Valley, San Rafael, Novato, the Tiburon Peninsula and the Twin Cities.
